Six shamrock plants and 6 carnations cost $48 at a certain flower shop. However, 4 shamrock plants and 8 carnations cost $40. What is the cost of 1 shamrock plant at this shop?

Six shamrock plants and 6 carnations cost $48 at a certain flower shop. However, 4 shamrock plants and 8 carn
shamrock=x; carnation=y

1)6x+6y= 48$ ; (divide by 6 ) x+y= 8

2)4x+8y=40$ ; (divide by 4 ) x+2y=10

subtract 0 - y = -2

so y=2 ; x+2=8 ; x= 8 -2 =6

shamrock= 6$; carnation=2$
