I watched the fight and I'm still not sure if they should have stopped the fight or not. Tito was hitting him w/ some hard elbows and Ken wasn't protecting himself but he wasn't really busted up. The first fight of night w/ Joe Stephenson his opponent was bleeding all over the place. The doctor had to stop the fight. I think the ref made a good call in the Tito vs. Shamrock fight, I just wish it had lasted longer since I had been waiting forever to see it.
Reply:If they wouldn't have stopped it (and I'm a big Shamrock fan), I'm afraid Ken would have gotten beaten way too bad ... brain damage ect ... I wish he'd just stay retired and continue to train fighters. He was done. Seriously ... he was non-responsive.
Reply:tito kicked his a$$!!!!! It was good that tito won...cause sham was talking a little too much shyt... and yeah, i think the refs were right in stopping the fight... did you see sham's face? looking like the elephant man... plus his tank was empty, you could see it... he had nothing left. he should be thanking the refs for saving his life...
Reply:Herb Dean ( the ref) did the right thing. He has to protect the fighters at all times. On the replay Shamrock was clearly not doing anything to protect himself...he wasn't answering the punches, nor was he covering his head. He wasn't even holding on to Ortiz in an attempt to shift position.

Herb Dean was the only one who saw Tim Sylvia's arm break in the fight against Frank Mir when he stopped that fight. Everyone else saw it on the replay - then had to agree that it was the right decision.

Lots of fighters immediately get up after being momentarily stunned or knocked out - it doesn't mean that they weren't knocked out. Five hits went unanswered and Dean did his job.

It did seem premature compared to the earlier fight that night that was so bloody and compared to the older UFC fights that went on longer. UFC rules have changed to better protect fighters - and unfortunately because of that, situations like the other night sometimes happen.

Personally I wanted Shamrock to win, so I was disappointed by the call, but I can't fault the ref, he did the right thing.
