UFC 61 (dont look if you dont want it spoiled) The outcome of the Shamrock/ Ortiz, your opinions please?

some devastating elbows but I think Shamrock deserved a little more time..being a veteran of the octagon..stopped too early

UFC 61 (dont look if you dont want it spoiled) The outcome of the Shamrock/ Ortiz, your opinions please?
i clearly think the fight was stopped to early. in all actuality i think many of the main event fights in recent months have been jokes. When sylvia and arvloski gought the second time that was stopped too early. gracie hughes too early. this one was way to early. i think they just have more money opportunities in ortiz. they need to go back to the old days when gracie ruled the roost and let them go at it until someone gets beat no ref stoppage. eventually this will be like pro wrestling............. scripted
Reply:Certainly the fight was stopped too early. Shamrock was going to lose anyway, but he did deserve a little more time in the ring. I heard Randy Coutoure say immediately after the stoppage, "I can't see why Herb stepped in so early." Certainly after being a multi-time champion he would know when a fight is being stopped too quickly. I believe it was a sham just to get another fight between the two %26amp; another bankroll of pay-per-view money.

If this is the way the UFC is going to treat their new-found popularity, then they don't deserve our continued support. I love the martial arts, and I have enjoyed many, many fights on pay-per-view from the UFC, but if they start "fixing" matches I'll not be a fan for long.
Reply:I think it was a safe bet for Shamrock, however you never know what can happen 10 seconds later. He could have had 15 more elbows, or could have taken just 8 more and have started blocking.

It may have been a little premature but he wasn't protecting himself and fighters are always being warned to block or the ref will stop the fight Herb was protecting the fighter cause he wasn't doing it himself.

Those were some vicious blows.
Reply:I have had time to think about this fight, and I have refined my earlier opinion.

The fight was stopped early, but only from a fan's perspective. In reality it was a good stoppage. The refs job is to protect the fighters. Tito dropped about 6 elbows across Shammy's face, no different than 6 punches. Sorry, but Ken was in trouble.
Reply:i think it was stopped at the right time..the rules clearly state the the person must be intelligently trying to defend themselves..and shamrock took five straight to the head without blocking..now i dont theink that would fall under intelligently defending oneself..it was stopped at the right time
Reply:Was it early? Yes. Was it fair? Yes.

Seriously I was pulling for Shamrock the whole time, but he just wasn't letting the ref know he was alright and able to intelligently defend himself. Could the outcome have been different had it not been stopped? Certainly, Shamrock could have won, however he could have also got his face broken, or worse.

In the end, Shamrock had an impressive career and I'd love to see him train up and fight again, not against Ortiz though.
Reply:Only 3 elbows landed cleanly. Definitely stopped too early.
